Production Coordinator and Technical Director for the Theatre Arts Program

Nebraska Wesleyan University seeks applications for a Production Coordinator and Technical Director for the Theatre Arts program. The start date for this position will be July 2024.
Nebraska Wesleyan University is a private university committed to the liberal arts with over 1600 undergraduates located in the capital city of Nebraska.
Primary goals for this position include effectively coordinating all technical areas of theatre production, developing production schedules, coordinating production meetings, training and mentoring, and serving as the primary liaison between designers, directors, student stage managers, and technical workers.
The successful candidate for this position will possess a wide range and high level of technical theatre expertise, initiative, self-motivation, commitments to safety, diversity and professional theatre industry standards, and will be able to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students. This position is a full-time, 12-month staff position. The position offers a comprehensive salary and full benefits package including health, vision, and dental insurance as well as retirement and tuition remission benefits.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with the Department Chair, Manager of Theatre Operations, Scene Shop Supervisor, Costume Shop Supervisor, designers, and faculty for all campus theatre productions.
- Ensure technical support and coordination of lighting and sound systems/personnel for theatre productions, and all other campus uses in the theatre facilities, and ensure the proper use and safe operation of the theatre and its technical assets.
- Develop production cost estimates, production schedules and coordinate production meetings.
- Manage and supervise technical rehearsals leading up to opening of productions, which may involve evenings and weekends.
- Oversee operation and supervision of counterweight system.
- Responsible for helping develop, teach, enforce, and evaluate proper safety protocols for equipment, supplies, storage, and structures in all theatre spaces.
- Will teach a minimum of one class per semester within the department.
- Assist, as necessary, with recruitment, training, scheduling, supervision, and evaluation of work study students in the shops and lighting/sound, and students doing practicum hours for classes, and create a positive, productive, and professional work environment.
- Maintain courteous, professional, and effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, vendors, and representatives of external organizations.
- Comply with all University policies and procedures.
- Assist in any technical area as needed and perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in theatre or related area preferred; candidates with a bachelor’s degree in theatre are also encouraged to apply.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Must have strong knowledge of lighting and sound technology and be able to demonstrate strong knowledge and skills of planning, budgeting, drafting, and carpentry to oversee various technical areas and other supervisors.
- Must have comprehensive knowledge of shop equipment and rigging equipment, as well as experience using, and teaching others to use, theatre tools and equipment.
- Ability to work within and manage a given budget for each theatre production and assist in estimating costs as production season is being planned.
- Ability to prepare, read and interpret technical drawings of ground plans, section views, front elevations, light plots, etc.
- Familiar with emergency procedures and protocols and a working knowledge of first aid and CPR.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work, set and meet deadlines, help devise a season schedule for shop and stage work, and work well under deadline pressures.
- Ability to work independently, as well as on a team.
- Must have excellent communication and human relations skills and have the ability to work with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and diverse populations.
