House Operations Director

Job Description
The House Operations Director provides leadership and oversight for all front-of-house operations at the Anderson Center for the Performing Arts at Binghamton University. This position is responsible for ensuring safe, professional, and welcoming guest experiences for audiences attending performances and events while supervising student staff, volunteers, and house management personnel.

The House Operations Director manages staffing operations, volunteer coordination, event logistics, patron services, training programs, and emergency response procedures while collaborating closely with production teams, event organizers, campus partners, and university leadership.

This position plays a critical role in maintaining operational excellence and setting the tone and atmosphere for audience engagement and customer service throughout the venue.

Primary Responsibilities

Front-of-House Operations Management
  • Oversee all front-of-house operations for performances, university events, lectures, school programs, and community events held at the Anderson Center.
  • Serve as House Manager during events as needed.
  • Ensure a safe, welcoming, and professional environment for patrons, artists, guests, and visitors.
  • Maintain overall patron comfort, safety, accessibility, and customer service standards.
  • Manage audience flow, seating operations, crowd management, and public-facing event logistics.

Staff Recruitment, Supervision, and Development
  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise hourly house management staff.
  • Develop monthly staffing schedules for all events, rehearsals, meetings, and non-technical activities occurring within Anderson Center spaces.
  • Oversee staff onboarding, HR paperwork, training procedures, and employee orientation.
  • Approve and manage employee timesheets and payroll submission processes.
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations for house management assistants.
  • Maintain operational manuals, staff procedures, and training documentation.

Volunteer Program Management
  • Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise volunteer ushers.
  • Coordinate volunteer orientation sessions and onboarding procedures.
  • Maintain volunteer manuals, scheduling systems, communication tools, and volunteer databases.
  • Develop volunteer training procedures and ensure high service standards are maintained.

Event Management and Coordination
  • Attend production meetings and coordinate operational planning for upcoming performances and events.
  • Maintain event information sheets and operational planning documents.
  • Coordinate with event organizers, campus departments, production teams, and external clients to support event execution.
  • Manage event attendance reporting and operational cost estimates.
  • Prepare event staffing reports and operational summaries for leadership review.
  • Coordinate school matinee logistics, including bus parking, arrival/departure procedures, and school group management.

Safety, Security, and Emergency Response
  • Maintain decorum in the house and address patron concerns or behavioral issues during events.
  • Respond to emergencies and unusual incidents, coordinating with University Police and emergency personnel as necessary.
  • Complete incident reports and communicate operational concerns to departmental leadership.
  • Ensure compliance with university safety procedures, evacuation protocols, and accessibility standards.

Operational Administration
  • Maintain front-of-house forms, operational documentation, and event management records.
  • Coordinate annual maintenance of uniforms, including staff jackets and volunteer vests.
  • Develop systems that improve operational efficiency and support continuous improvement efforts.
  • Assist in long-term planning related to audience services and front-of-house operational excellence.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience managing event operations, customer service, hospitality operations, venue management, theater operations, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising staff, volunteers, or teams.
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience coordinating logistics for live events, public programs, or large gatherings.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and respond effectively during emergencies or high-pressure situations.
  • Proficiency with scheduling systems, spreadsheets, and standard office software.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in performing arts venues, theaters, concert halls, or higher education event operations.
  • Experience supervising student employees within a university environment.
  • Knowledge of crowd management, venue safety procedures, and emergency response protocols.
  • Experience developing staff training programs and operational manuals.
  • Familiarity with front-of-house theater operations and audience services management.

Work Environment
This position requires evening and weekend availability based on performance and event schedules. The successful candidate must be comfortable working in active event environments and managing multiple operational priorities simultaneously.
