Department Summary:
The Department of Theatre at Bridgewater State University is committed to the artistic empowerment and educational invigoration of our students. With a strong liberal arts core, we develop well-rounded students, prepared to engage with their communities as professional theatre practitioners and educators in the arts. BSU Department of Theatre offers a BA in Theatre Arts, a BA in Theatre Education, and a minor in Theatre Arts. The Theatre Department consists of four full time faculty members, approximately 15 part time faculty members, and enrolls approximately 80 majors and minors.
Our department produces three faculty directed shows each season, including one musical, one lab-style production associated with a semester long course, and one straight play. Additionally, we produce two student directed and designed shows each spring. Our department also participates in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

Essential Duties:
The Department of Theatre invites applications for the position of tenure track Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will be expected to direct one production each academic year, mentor student directors, and teach courses in directing, acting, voice and movement, theatre for young audiences, and/or general education courses in theatre. Bridgewater State University has a 4-4 teaching responsibility. Faculty are expected to maintain a creative presence in their field, engage in departmental and university service, and advise theatre education and theatre arts majors and minors. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to mentor undergraduate research in theatre and theatre education and participate in recruitment efforts.
The successful candidate will work with their colleagues to help meet the mission of the department in serving and supporting our racially and ethnically diverse campus community.
Required Qualifications:
MFA or PhD in Theatre Performance and/or Directing by September 1, 2024.
Experience working with diverse student populations from a wide range of age, ethnicity, national origin and ability; engage in and develop innovative teaching strategies; effectively assess student learning outcomes.
Record of directing straight plays and musicals at collegiate level.
Record of teaching collegiate theatre performance and directing.
Record of student-centered teaching approach.
Record of teaching theatre for young audiences.
Record of related professional theatre experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Understanding of the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for Theatre and the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure.
Experience mentoring student directors, dramaturgs, and researchers.
Experience with recruitment and retention for theatre departments.
