San Francisco State University, School of Theatre & Dance offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Theatre/Performance Studies with a secondary expertise in Theatrical Stage Direction beginning August 2023. We seek a colleague whose primary assignments will include teaching in the undergraduate theatre history/literature sequence, teaching core requirements of the Theatre Arts MA program, and directing main stage productions as needed, while maintaining an active research program in their area(s) of expertise and/or an active professional directing presence. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service, through diversity, to the excellence of the academic community.

The School of Theatre & Dance offers a comprehensive program of practical and theoretical courses for undergraduate and graduate students whose interests center in various aspects of educational and professional theatre and/or dance. As a center for the training of future theatre artists the School of Theatre & Dance is committed to introducing a diversity of theatrical traditions and cultures to students. The School of Theatre & Dance is one of the most historically significant programs in the nation. Our school currently has approximately 250 undergraduate students. The National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST) accredits the theatre degree within the School of Theatre & Dance.

Responsibilities

The position's primary assignment is undergraduate teaching in Theatre Studies, mentoring and advising undergraduate and graduate students, some graduate teaching, developing an active ongoing scholarship program or program of creative work in one's area of specialty, and ongoing committee and service assignments. Qualifications

Required--

Ph.D. in Theatre History, Performance Studies, or a related field from an accredited institution. Terminal degree must be completed by the first day of employment.
Two or more years of successful university-level teaching in the area of Theatre/Performance Studies.

Preferred--

Record of teaching contributions in the areas of theatre history, literature, criticism and/or theory, and theatrical direction.
Active in national theatre associations
Active record of scholarship/creative activity related to specialty area and evidence of external support or the potential for external funding of these activities.
Professional theatrical direction credits at regionally, nationally, or internationally recognized companies.
Demonstrated ability to incorporate inclusion, diversity, and educational equity in teaching, and/or scholarship/creative works
Experience teaching and working closely with students from diverse communities
Record of contributing to collegial, supportive and collaborative work environments

Rank and salary
