Position Summary
Full-time position available on or after March 1, 2022 for the Theatre Department. This position is on the 10/12 Pay Plan with the months of June 15th - August 15th off each year. Benefits and salary are paid over 12 months. In the initial year, pay adjustments may be required to allow the incumbent to adjust to the 10/12 Pay Plan. Also, income shortfalls may occur depending on the timing of the hire relative to the time in off-work status, and shortfalls may have an impact on benefits.

Under the general direction of the Department Chair, (and lead direction of the Technical Director), the Performing Arts Technician II helps in the planning and implementation of all technical aspects the Theatre Department's productions while also maintaining all production spaces. The primary emphasis will be on scenic construction and finishing, but this position will also work with the lighting, sound, and rigging systems. The incumbent orders materials, manages material budgets, performs maintenance on equipment, and helps maintain a safe working environment. This position is responsible for leading largely untrained students in all area of technical theatre.

Job Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Participate in the planning and organization of all theatre production activities.
  • Create and construct scenery and properties from design specifications and verbal communication. Work may include: painting sets, scene decor, and murals; operating and maintaining stage equipment; set construction using wood, metal and other materials; inspecting, repairing and performing regular maintenance on rigging systems and equipment to ensure safety standards are maintained.
  • Lead largely untrained students in the above activities, and must establish and maintain good working relationships with them in workshop situations, as well as train and maintain proper safety standards.
  • Assist in the maintenance of facility and production calendars.
  • Maintain an inventory of theatre supplies and be familiar with general stage materials and their suppliers.
  • Order stage supplies to maintain inventories and meet production demands.
  • Assist in bookkeeping and record maintenance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications
    EXPERIENCE: Minimum 2 years of FTE experience working for a theater, repertory, or stock company in the area of scenic construction.
    EDUCATION: Associate's degree in a related field. (Additional years of applicable experience may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis.)

    Preferred Qualifications

  • BA in Theatre Arts with an emphasis in Technical Theatre.
  • Strong welding and fabrication skills in Mig, Tig, and Stick.
  • Working knowledge and experience with applicable design software, including; CAD, Photoshop, CNC, etc.
  • Working knowledge and experience with programing theatrical lighting and sound operating systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of counterweight, rigging, and other stage systems and equipment.
  • General knowledge of basic electrical theory and working knowledge of lighting and sound equipment.
  • General knowledge of methods and problem solving related to scenery and staging operations.

    Required Qualifications

  • Ability to identify and appropriate materials and supplies needed for projects and manage materials budgets for production specialty and specific projects.
  • Ability to assist in the training and supervision of students involved in productions.
  • Thorough and specialized knowledge and experience in applicable production specialty. More sophisticated knowledge of design theory and principles to be able to translate design specifications, blueprints or drawings into costume, scene, lighting or sound production and effects.
  • Ability to independently manage production support projects and productions by breaking segments into working units that coincide with production needs.
  • Ability to work on more complex projects/designs and to work with more difficult materials and equipment, including the ability to select and use the most appropriate materials to meet production needs.
  • Ability to use more complex features of applicable software packages for production specialty.
  • Ability to plan the layout and use of work areas.
  • Thorough knowledge of safety requirements and standards related to production support specialty and stage operations and ability to train others in safety measures and ensure compliance with codes and regulations.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of historical periods for design and construction of materials and effects related to applicable production specialty.
  • For scenery construction and stage operation, thorough working knowledge of carpentry including ability to operate applicable hand, power and woodworking tools; ability to work with a wide range of set and scenery constructions materials; ability to paint scenery from designer renderings, elevations, sketches or models; thorough knowledge of lighting, sound, counterweight and other stage systems and equipment; and ability to operate and troubleshoot computerized set and scenery systems.

    Salary Range
    Anticipated salary will be $2,908 - $3,489 per month plus excellent paid benefits. (Salary depending on the qualifications of the successful finalist. Full Performing Arts Technician II range: $2,908 - $5,261 per month.)
