Job-Specific Responsibilities
Position Summary
Directs all aspects of properties for ART productions and advise on prop needs for undergraduate productions

Position Responsibilities

Promote an inclusive and safe work environment:

Foster a culture of safety, and ensure safe work environment and practices are observed
Hire and supervise Properties Staff (Assistant Properties Manager, Props Carpenter). Conduct biannual performance reviews and goal-setting sessions. Recruit, hire, onboard, and supervise overhire, and ensure compliance with the union (HUCTW) and Harvard employment policies
Oversee the daily operation of the properties department, including creating build drawings or advising staff on build techniques, quality control, and communicating changes as they come up

Support Artistic Vision and Goals:
Collaboration with Scenic/Properties Designers to accomplish their designs within budget (materials, rentals, shipping, transportation, and labor) and timeline. Keep Production Management up to date on budget and timeline
Collaboration with Stage Management and Scenic Designer on prop lists, rehearsal props, and responding to prop notes in rehearsal and performance reports
Facilitate props handoff to Stage Management and Stage Ops department at the start of tech

Budget Management:
Manage cross-seasonal props budgets for supplies and shop maintenance
Collaborate and maintain open lines of communication:
Collaboration with other production departments on cross-departmental projects
Attend production meetings, studio rehearsals, tech rehearsals, and previews as needed
In conjunction with the Pedagogical PM, ensure student usage of the prop shop adheres to ART safety standards
Maintain on-site and offsite properties storage and document stock and saved shows. Rent or lend stock to student groups or outside organizations as possible
Represent Properties department in building meetings as we design and build our new theatre

Basic Qualifications
Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications in order to be considered for this role:

Strong knowledge and vocabulary of props construction methods and materials, including wood and metal construction, painting, mold making, and upholstery
General knowledge of furniture history, and ability to research and advise on the historical accuracy of props


Additional Qualifications and Skills



  • Ability to quickly and accurately budget and report the amount of time needed for prop construction, sourcing, and show running tasks

  • Empathy, listening skills, and strong ability to read body language and other nonverbal clues are essential

  • Conflict resolution skills - diffusing tension, navigating difficult conversations, mediating resolutions

  • Ability to adapt and quickly communicate changes throughout the production process

  • Must be capable of overseeing multiple projects happening simultaneously via delegating and collaborating with properties staff

  • Class D driver's license and comfort driving sprinter van preferred, but not a requirement

Working Conditions
A.R.T. is a multistory building without an elevator, with work taking place on all levels. The Properties Manager may be asked to assist with moving tools, furniture, props, and materials to and from storage or around the building. This position requires night and weekend work, particularly during tech and previews. It also requires occasional local and out-of-state travel, primarily for the support of rehearsals in NYC. On-site properties storage is in the basement of the theater. Our offsite props storage is in a warehouse space an approximately 45-minute drive from the theater and contains a second-story loft accessed by stairs, as well as multiple heights of shelves accessed by rolling stair units.
