Overview


The Department of Music at Princeton seeks an experienced arts administrator with a proven track record for planning, implementing, and assessing long- and short-term artistic initiatives and programs to serve as Program Manager for Performance Activities.



Under the direction of the Director for Administration and Operations, the Program Manager for Performance Activities will plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate the administration of the department's artistic and performance programs, including the undergraduate certificate programs and the performance elements of the graduate PhD program in composition. This position oversees the administrative and financial planning and implementation of performance courses, new artistic initiatives, collaborative partnerships often led by tenured faculty and graduate students as part of their research, and faculty-led ensembles and programs including but not limited to African Music, Jazz Studies, Early Music, New Music, Choral Activities, Instrumental, Vocal, etc. This position works closely with faculty Directors to support and execute policy for the Certificate and Studio Lesson Programs.



The Program Manager for Performance Activities serves as the Department's primary point of contact for the 50+ performance faculty lecturers in the department, partnering with the Director for Administration and Operations to address the myriad issues that may arise and to provide the faculty with strong communication, clear policies and processes, and empathetic support.



The Program Manager for Performance Activities communicates regularly with students involved in all aspects of the Department's performance programs, working closely with the faculty directors of the program to address the students' needs while developing and implementing equitable policies that support students' academic and artistic progress within the resources available to the program. This position also serves as a primary point person in collaboration with the Production Manager for student-led ensembles and performance groups.




Responsibilities

The Program Manager for Performance Activities oversees the administration of performance programs, ensembles, and performance-related activities and partnerships in the context of the University's mission of teaching and research. Includes but not limited to:

  • Design, plan, implement, and assess department-wide policies, processes, handbooks, and systems for the Department's performance programs and ensembles.

  • Oversee financial, physical, and technical resources needed to support the performance programs; develop, implement, and evaluate budgets to ensure long- and short-term artistic visions and programs are aligned with department resources, priorities, and long-range planning.

  • Provides guidance, partnership, and support for faculty directors and other staff managing performance budgets and endowed funds in partnership with Business Manager.



The Program Manager for Performance Activities manages, executes, and assesses long-range artistic planning efforts of the department, working closely with the individual faculty directors who run each program. Responsibilities include:



  • Develop and oversee planning administration of multi-season performance activities including faculty and student-led performance ensembles, certificate programs, Trenton Arts Program performance activities, performance courses, artistic initiatives, and collaborative partnerships across the department and campus.

  • Foster a culture of rigor and balance between vision, academic objectives, policies, and graduation requirements of our performance programs, aligning priorities and available resources.

  • Develop, cultivate, and maintain key relationships with stakeholders of the department both within the University and beyond, fostering interest in and support for the performance activities of the Music Department



The Program Manager for Performance Activities serves as the Department's primary point of contact with the 50+ performance faculty lecturers in the department. Responsibilities include:



  • Address questions and issues ranging from HR to financial, logistic to artistic, providing attentive responses and consistency across the department.

  • Manage processes for studio faculty appointments, reappointments, hiring/recruiting, and onboarding processes for performance and studio faculty lecturers.

  • Provide consistent, high-level communication and proactive solution-finding to address issues raised by the performance faculty and students.

  • Cultivate a climate of welcome and inclusion, ensuring that all members of the performance faculty feel valued and heard as key stakeholders within the department's community.



The Program Manager for Performance Activities manages the department's undergraduate Certificate Programs in Musical Performance and Jazz Studies. Responsibilities include:



  • Work with faculty Directors to seek out, encourage, and support students enrolled in the Certificate Programs, providing opportunities for students to learn about the programs and monitoring and facilitating completion of program requirements.

  • Provide ongoing opportunities for assessment, feedback, evaluation, and modification of programs (including but not limited to annual review of requirements and policies, climate surveys, creation and updating of program handbook, website, and other communication assets).

  • Oversee financial management for Certificate Programs, working closely with the Business Manager, faculty, staff, and students to align artistic pursuits with budgetary resources available to the programs.



The Program Manager for Performance Activities manages the department's Studio Lesson Program and the administration of performance course offerings. Responsibilities include:



  • Manage program comprised of 50+ studio instructors and 300+ students enrolled each year, balancing artistic objectives with financial and human resource constraints.

  • Oversee administration of program, including but not limited to processes related to faculty hiring, onboarding, and long-range planning, budgeting, and assessment.

  • Develop efficient processes to manage billing and subsidy systems and policies for the program, ensuring equitable and consistent practices across the department.

  • Develop and maintain systems to ensure accurate tracking of students' progress in performance-related courses in fulfillment of certificate requirements.

  • Manage requests for culminating performances and/or workshops related to performance courses, working closely with Production Manager to define priorities and manage expectations while fulfilling educational objectives of performance courses.

Ability to build strong relationships and work closely with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds

Bachelor's degree and 7+ year of relevant professional experience



Preferred:


Experience working in an academic and/or higher education environment
Advanced degree or training in performance or arts administration
Demonstrated interest in working closely with faculty and students
