Job-Specific Responsibilities
Position Summary

The Sound Technician (A2) is responsible for assisting with the implementation and consistent reproduction of the Sound Design for all of the ART's main stage shows. On shows with live musicians or actors in body mics, the A2 works backstage to ensure microphones (both wireless and wired) are properly placed and functioning correctly. The A2 is a critical part of the production process including pre-production planning, system build, installation, technical rehearsals, previews, the show run, and strike.

As a member of the ART Sound Department, the A2 is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, documenting, and installing sound systems for other areas of the Loeb Drama Center, OBERON, and other ART production venues.

The A2 functions as a supporting member of the department. In the absence of other departmental staff, the A2 may be responsible for managing members of the crew. High-level critical thinking, technical expertise, poise under pressure, and strong communication and organizational skills are critical to success in this position.

Since the A2's position is directly related to installing, running, and striking shows, it is subject to seasonal furlough periods.
Position Responsibilities

  • Assists with system planning: While the majority of show paperwork is generated by the Sound Designer, Sound Supervisor and A1, the A2 is also expected to participate in this process.

  • System build/ load in: Generally under the direct supervision of the Sound Supervisor, the A2 will participate in the assembly of system components and their installation in the performance space.

  • Programming and operating for technical rehearsals and previews: As necessary, attend rehearsals (especially designer run and sitzprobe) to begin to learn the show.

  • Running shows: Assist the A1 in daily system checks to ensure equipment is free of damage and functioning as expected. This includes checking microphones, loudspeakers, playback systems communications systems and any other peripheral equipment or systems.

  • Striking/ loading out equipment: Work with the Sound Supervisor and A1 to create a plan for the show's strike. This includes lists of equipment that must be returned to rental shops, equipment staying in the air and schedules for what has to happen when.

  • Equipment maintenance: As required by the Sound Supervisor, perform regularly scheduled maintenance to ensure equipment is performing as expected.

  • Working on other projects: At the request of the Sound Supervisor, operate and assist in the implementation of systems for special events, HRDC or ART Institute productions.




Basic Qualifications
Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications in order to be considered for this role:

  • Education: High school graduate or equivalent with some related college background preferred.

  • Experience: Minimum of two years experience in professional or academic theatre required with specific experience in sound, including demonstrated proficiency with wireless microphone systems, assembly of system components and their installation in the performance space, checking and troubleshooting as needed sound systems -- microphones, loudspeakers, playback systems communications systems, and any other peripheral equipment or systems.




Additional Qualifications and Skills



  • Typical software skills include FileMaker Pro, Microsoft Office and Sennheiser Wireless Systems Manager/ Shure Wireless Workbench.

  • The ability to read and understand technical drawings and system flow paperwork is critical to the success of the A2.




Physical Requirements

The A2 must be able to climb a ladder, be comfortable working at height and be able to lift 50 pounds safely.
