Overview
Perform a variety of costume construction tasks for new costume pieces used in departmental acting productions. Perform a variety of alterations to rental and/or recycled costumes according to individual performer specifications. Perform fittings on rented items as needed. Construct and refurbish stock items; maintain inventory and oversee the receipt of materials inventory. Perform routine maintenance and basic repair of equipment and tools; train casual and student employees with the use of and care of equipment and tools.
Responsibilities
Provide technical guidance to student designers regarding costume construction and fabric selection. Train casual and student employees with the use of and care of equipment and tools such as industrial and domestic sewing machines, sergers, and industrial irons, scissors, matte knives, rotary cutters, etc. Provide technical guidance to student designers regarding costume construction and fabric selection. Create charts and spreadsheets to assist designers in organizing for their production for dress rehearsals and performances. Participate in dress rehearsals to ensure wardrobe, hair,wig and accessory aspects are complete and functioning.
Perform routine maintenance and basic repair of equipment and tools; clean; check for malfunctions; repair or replace basic parts; notify supervisor and vendors of need for complex repairs to equipment.
Ensure wardrobe, hair and wig care, organization and storage during performance run. Asist in the creation of procedures and schedules for quick changes.
Required Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Preferred Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Theater
Required Experience:
2+ years experience with costume construction, including sewing, cutting, basic draping, dyeing, and performing routine alterations and tailoring. Previous experience in the use of industrial and domestic sewing machines, sergers, industrial irons and rotary cutters.
Preferred Experience:
3+ years experience with costume construction
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Ability to set up and operate sewing equipment, perform routine repairs, assess user needs including those that are moderately complex in nature, troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, and recommend equipment. Excellent communication skills.
